Nagpur, Maharashtra: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Friday launched a sharp attack on the state government, alleging that it is intentionally avoiding the appointment of a Leader of Opposition despite enjoying a “huge super majority.” Speaking to reporters, Thackeray argued that the role of an opposition leader is essential in any democracy to keep the government accountable and remind it of its duties.

“In any democracy, the Leader of Opposition holds a very responsible and important position. It is necessary so that the government is reminded of its duties and obligations. But even with such a huge super majority, this government is afraid of the opposition and therefore does not want a Leader of Opposition,” he said.

Thackeray also took aim at the BJP over its stance on cow protection, bringing up Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s earlier remarks on beef consumption. “If you want to talk about cow protection, then ask Union Minister Kiren Rijiju how he is in the BJP’s cabinet. He himself has said that he eats beef and that nobody can stop him. So first, the BJP should be asked how he was made a minister again,” he added.
