BY A STAFF REPORTER: Christmas carols are the backbone of the Christmas season. The day is incomplete without Christmas carols. Let's learn the names of some of the most famous Christmas carols of all time.

1.Silent Night: It is originally written in German. Composed in 1818 by Franz Javar Gruber with lyrics by Joseph Mohr and translated into English in 1859. During the Christmas Truce of 1914, English and German soldiers joined together to sing this song during World War I.

2. In the Bleak Mid-Winter – Gustav Holst version: Based on a poem by English poet Christina Rossetti. This carol was written in 1872 in response to a magazine request for Christmas poems. The poem became recognized as a carol after it was published in "The English Hymnal" in 1906 with music by Gustav Holst.

3. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing: This carol is always going to be one of the most recognizable and popular on the list. It's also got a cracking discount.

4. O Come All Ye Faithful: It is not clear who originally wrote the music for this hymn. Possible candidates include King John IV of Portugal and John Francis Wade, while composers Handel and Gluck have been suggested as the brains behind the tune. The song is also featured in the 1992 film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. when it was played by a symphony orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

5. O Little Town of Bethlehem: After a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Rector Phillips Brooks wrote the text of this hymn inspired by the view of Bethlehem from the mountains of Palestine. Three years later in 1871, his church organist Lewis Redner wrote the tune for the local Sunday school children's choir.
