In a significant move, Uttarakhand became the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code as the UCC bill was passed in the Uttarakhand assembly on 7th February, Wednesday in Dehradun.

UCC Bill passed in Uttarakhand Assembly

BY A STAFF REPORTER: In a significant move, Uttarakhand became the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code as the UCC bill was passed in the Uttarakhand assembly on 7th February, Wednesday in Dehradun.

Moreover, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the makers of the Constitution gave the right to states to introduce UCC at appropriate time under article 44. 

Following this, BJP-ruled states including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam are in talks to introduce the UCC bill in their states. Although, many opposition leaders are not happy with the bill as they consider it 'unfair'. 

The assembly MLAs were seen celebrating the historic Uniform Civil Code Bill 2024. The controversial Uniform Civil Code's purpose is to establish a uniform legal framework for all citizens irrespective of their faith or religion. As of now, laws regarding marriage, succession, and divorce are based on various religions. the Uttarakhand ministers cleared the Uniform Civil Code draft report in a cabinet meeting held at the residence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on 4th February in Dehradun.
