Geneva – The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported an increase in acute respiratory infections (ARI) across the Northern Hemisphere, consistent with seasonal patterns during this time of the year. The rise is attributed to seasonal epidemics of respiratory pathogens, including seasonal influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus (hMPV), and mycoplasma pneumonia, among others.
WHO notes that many countries conduct routine surveillance for influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and ARIs, enabling them to monitor the uptick in cases and respond effectively. Recent weeks have seen rates of ILI and ARI surpass baseline levels in some temperate countries of the Northern Hemisphere, signaling the expected surge in respiratory infections during colder months.
Experts emphasize the importance of preventive measures, including vaccinations for influenza and other preventable respiratory diseases, hand hygiene, and seeking timely medical care for severe symptoms.
The WHO continues to monitor the global trends and urges healthcare systems to remain vigilant as the respiratory infection season progresses.
