The rise in suicide rates in the state is alarming as 25,478 people have committed suicide in different instances as per the government's data, marking a 21% increase in suicide rates in the past three years.

BY A STAFF REPORTER: In a controversial statement, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday took a dig at BJP and PM Narendra Modi for high suicide rates in Gujarat.

Kharge expressed concern and grief on the data presented by the Gujarat government during the Assembly budget session that over 25,000 people, including nearly 500 students, committed suicide in Gujarat in the last three financial years under the rule of the BJP-led Gujarat government. 

Furthermore, Kharge argued that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been silent over the increased suicide rates in his homeland, marking the silence as deafening. Kharge remarked that Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel's acknowledgment of the crisis is inadequate and fails to address the fundamental governance failures. Moreover, Kharge demanded concrete action to prevent further tragedies.

The Gujarat state budget was presented on 2nd February in the Gujarat legislative assembly.
