BY A STAFF REPORTER: In a recent development, former Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh will be awarded with Bharat Ratna. 

On his X handle, PM Modi praised Singh for his contributions to the rights and welfare of farmers. He also highlighted that Chaudhary Charan Singh stood firm against the emergency imposed during former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's tenure. 

Chaudhary Charan Singh was the 5th Prime Minister of India. Moreover, he never faced the parliament during his tenure. He is also referred to as the Champion of India's peasants. Along with this, he also served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Union Home Minister, and Minister of Finance. Furthermore, PV Narasimha Rao and Dr. MS Swaminathan will also be awarded India's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna.
