Firecrackers Outside Bilkis Bano's Residence After SC's Decision

The Top Court declared that the State government does not have the authority to mitigate capital punishment. Consequently, SC canceled the remission order of the 11 culprits and instructed them to surrender to the prison authorities.

BY A STAFF REPORTER: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the 11 culprits of the Bilkis Bano case to surrender before Jail authorities in under two weeks and dismissed the Gujarat government's decision to award remission to the 11 convicts. Bilkis' hometown celebrated the decision with firecrackers.

In the adjudication of a Public Interest litigation filed against the 11 culprits' death penalty mitigation, the Top Court declared that the State government does not have the authority to mitigate capital punishment. Consequently, SC canceled the remission order of the 11 culprits and instructed them to surrender to the prison authorities.

To celebrate the decision that favored Bano, people were seen bursting firecrackers in front of her residence in Devgadh Baria, Gujarat.

The Bilkis Bano case traces its roots back to 2002 when 11 people raped Bilkis Bano, who at that time was pregnant, and murdered her family of 6 members, including her daughter during Gujarat Riots 2002
