New Delhi, July 1 — In a decisive step to combat air pollution, the Delhi government will implement a fuel ban on End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) starting July 1, 2025. Under the policy, petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years will no longer be allowed to refuel at petrol stations across the national capital.
The move follows National Green Tribunal (NGT) and Supreme Court directives aimed at reducing vehicular emissions, a major contributor to Delhi's chronic air quality crisis.
To enforce compliance, the government has begun installing CCTV cameras and public address systems at petrol pumps. These systems will help identify non-compliant vehicles and alert fuel station staff in real time. In addition, challans are being issued to violators, with vehicle owners already facing penalties for operating prohibited ELVs on city roads.
Authorities are also conducting awareness drives and have urged vehicle owners to scrap or deregister outdated vehicles in accordance with Central Motor Vehicle Rules.
