Chennai: Cyclone Fengal, currently positioned over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is advancing towards the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline. As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the system, moving westwards at a speed of 7 kmph, was centered at 1430 hours IST on November 30 near latitude 12.3°N and longitude 80.5°E. It is approximately 50 km southeast of Mahabalipuram, 80 km east-northeast of Puducherry, and 90 km south-southeast of Chennai.

The cyclonic storm is predicted to continue its westward trajectory and make landfall along the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts, between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry, by the evening of November 30. The system is expected to bring wind speeds ranging from 70-80 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 90 kmph.

IMD has also warned of the possibility of a slow movement as the storm nears the coastline, potentially leading to prolonged heavy rainfall and strong winds in the affected regions. Authorities have issued alerts for residents in low-lying and coastal areas to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions, and precautionary measures are being enforced to mitigate the impact of the cyclone.

As the evening progresses, the IMD and local authorities will continue to monitor the system and provide updates. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels.
