Mumbai | In a tragic maritime accident near Mumbai's Butcher Island, a Navy boat collided with the passenger vessel 'Neelkamal' at approximately 3:55 PM on December 18, 2024. The collision resulted in 13 fatalities, comprising 10 civilians and 3 Navy personnel, as confirmed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. An additional 101 individuals have been rescued and are currently receiving medical attention.
The 'Neelkamal' was en route to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination, when the incident occurred. The collision led to the vessel capsizing near Butcher Island, a location known for its oil terminal facilities. Rescue operations were promptly initiated, involving a coordinated effort by the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and Mumbai Police. The deployment included 11 rescue crafts and 4 helicopters, facilitating the swift evacuation of survivors.
Among the rescued, two individuals sustained critical injuries and have been admitted to the Navy hospital for advanced medical care. The identities of the deceased are being ascertained, and efforts are underway to contact their families. Chief Minister Fadnavis has announced an ex gratia payment of ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the families of each deceased victim.
"The entire incident will be thoroughly investigated by the police and the Navy to determine the cause of the collision and to prevent such tragedies in the future," stated Chief Minister Fadnavis during a press briefing. He also mentioned that a comprehensive report would be made available once the investigation concludes.
As of the latest reports, search and rescue operations continue to ensure that no individuals remain unaccounted for. Authorities have indicated that a final assessment regarding any missing persons will be available by the morning of December 19, 2024. The incident has raised concerns about maritime safety protocols in the busy waterways surrounding Mumbai, prompting calls for stringent measures to prevent future occurrences.
