Damascus Indian embassy celebrates India@75

As part of celebrations of India@75, the Embassy of India, Damascus organised a colourful cultural event at Syndicate Artiste Theater Aleppo on 6th November 2021. Among the dignitaries attended, were: Vice Governor representing the Governor, Secretary, Aleppo branch of Arab Socialist Baa’th Party, President, Aleppo Chamber of Commerce and President, Aleppo University.







 On the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Ambassador spoke of India’s past glory, achievements, post-independence achievements and India-Syria cultural relations which have historical linkages. India-Syria are also matrimonially connected as it is said, King Celeucus Nekater, founder of Afamea City, married his daughter to Chandragupta Maurya. Even students from Syria studied in world’s first university Takshila. In 662 A.D., the Syrian scholar from orthodox church had said that Indian computing skills surpassed description.







 



 The ancient Aleppo city is also connected with India with the silk road. During the war, it has been terribly devastated and destroyed and they have now started rising from the ashes of destruction. The cultural heritage of Aleppo also became victim of war. Hence, organising a cultural event to mark the 75th Anniversary of India’s independence in Aleppo has special significance for the people of Aleppo.







 

 During the programme, a documentary on India@75, showcasing India was played. The cultural programme included ‘Namaste India’ bollywood, Armenian, Spanish, Salsa and Tango dance performances, among others depicting multi-cultural fabric of India and Syria.
