Ismail Khan is called the 'Lion of Herat'. He was the former governor of Herat. He had been fighting the Taliban for the past several days, but was captured by the Taliban. He is said to have been placed under house arrest by the Taliban. He had been fighting the Taliban since its inception. Ismail Khan was born in Shindand district of Herat province in 1946. In 1979, he became captain of the Afghan National Army.
