At Least 5 Peruvian Soldiers Die After Fleeing Protests by River

BY A STAFF REPORTER: Five soldiers have been killed while crossing a river to escape protests in southern Peru, the country's human rights watchdog said. Members of peru's army went missing while trying to cross a river in peru's southern Puno region, where protests have been held demanding the release of former president Pedro Castillo from prison and the resignation of his successor Dina Boluart. According to the Peruvian government, protesters attacked soldiers as they tried to intensify military operations in the region. They then decided to cross a dangerous river and choose an "alternative route" and were swept away in the stream. The joint command of peru's armed forces said the body of one soldier had been recovered.
