FBI: Kolkata magistrate records statement of US woman through audio-visual

BY A STAFF REPORTER: A magistrate in Kolkata has recorded the statement of one of the American victims of this crime through audio-visual mode on 9.2.2023. The victim whose statement was recorded under Section 164 CrPC is a 76-year-old woman who lost her life’s savings to cyber criminals pretending to be tech-support officials. Three persons have been arrested so far in this case, two from Kolkata and one from Ajmer while he was on the run after the first arrest

Two persons were arrested from Kolkata and one from Ajmer. The recording of the American woman's statement began at 5 pm on Friday. It lasted about 2 hours. However, there were some technical and logistical issues due to which the process of recording her statement became complicated and time-consuming. Such a coordination between India and the FBI is quite significant, according to prominent quarters. The FBI teamed up with the Cyber Department of Kolkata Police to help the American woman record her statement before a magistrate. Another duped person of the same crime has similarly expressed his desire to record his statement and investigators are likely to approach the court soon with an application to fix a date.
