Meghalaya election: Who is ahead of the two Sangma?

By A Staff Reporter : The 2023 elections in Meghalaya politics are going to be a tough fight between the two Sangmas. On one side is the current Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and on the other side, Mukul Sangma, the state leader and Trinamool State President and Conrad Sangma's old opponent.Anti-ruler air is working as a election factor in the state. At the moment the NPP government led by Conrad Sangma is plagued with challenges like corruption, poor health system, unemployment. As a result, these issues are being used by the opposition to create an anti-ruling context there. Also Meghalaya, Assam border conflict is starting to become a big factor in this poll. The problems of those living in the border areas are expected to be a big factor in the 2023 assembly polls in Meghalaya.
On the other hand, the Congress led by Mukul Sangma was the majority party in the 60-seat Meghalaya assembly polls in 2018.21 seats were won.NPP won 19 seats, UDP won 8, PDAF 4, BJP retained 2 seats. An independent candidate won. Then in 2021, under the leadership of Mukul Sangma, 12 MLAs joined Trinamool. The remaining Congress MLAs joined the NPP.As a result, Congress went completely on the backfoot.
Experts say corruption could be a major factor in determining the fate of Meghalaya. This issue of corruption is taking a very big shape in Jaintia, Khasi, Garo hill valleys. Mamata camp is ready to occupy Shillong with Dapute leader like Mukul Sama. From there Meghalaya is expected to be completed on February 27 with quite a bit of tension.
