 By A Staff Reporter : Apart from being a leader-freedom fighter, Subhash Chandra Bose was also a journalist.He used to write in a newspaper.He was soon appointed in charge of the campaign of the Bengal Province Congress Committee.His political mentor was Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, the great advocate of nationalism in Bengal.When Deshbandhu was elected Mayor of Kolkata Municipality in 1924, Subhash Chandra was working under him.Chittaranjan Das was more flexible than Mahatma Gandhi and more sympathetic to extremism, which attracted young idealists like Bengali leader Subhash Chandra Bose at the time. Chittaranjan, introduced Subhash Chandra into nationalist politics. Subhash Chandra was involved in Indian National Congress politics for the next 20 years.His guru Chittaranjan Das was the spokesman of aggressive nationalism in Bengal.


In 1923, Subhash Chandra was elected the President of the All India Youth Congress and simultaneously the Secretary of the Bengal Provincial Congress. He also worked as the editor of the newspaper founded by Chittaranjan Das. After Chittaranjan Das was elected Mayor of Calcutta in 1924, Bose served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Calcutta Municipality.In 1925, Subhash Chandra Bose was arrested and sent to jail in Mandalay, where he contracted tuberculosis. After his release from prison in 1927, Subhash became the general secretary of the Indian National Congress and started working for India's independence with Jawaharlal Nehru.In late December 1928, Bose organized the annual meeting of the Indian National Congress in Calcutta. His most memorable role was as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Congress Volunteer Force. Shortly thereafter, Subhash Chandra Bose was re-arrested and sent to jail for unlawful agitation. Then in 1930 he was elected Mayor of Calcutta.
