Since 1904, FIFA has acquired the right to host the Football World Cup. But it took 26 years to organize the first mega tournament. Due to the economic downturn, a lack of interest in a professional global tournament and a long travel period in South America, most of the top European football playing nations refused to participate in the inaugural World Cup. The only World Cup where all member countries were invited to participate without any eligibility criteria. Seven of the 13 teams were from the United States. Belgium, France, Romania and Yugoslavia were included in less than two months of the tournament. All four teams arrived in the host city of Montevideo on the same ship.
