Sovabazar Rajbari's Puja

BY A STAFF REPORTER: Shobhabazar Rajbari has been carrying the tradition of Durga Puja for years. Durga Puja ceremony at Shobhabazar Rajbari is centuries old. In 1757, when King Nabakrishna Deva rewarded Robert Clive and other officials of the English East India Company, the Durga Puja of the Dev family became the talk of the society (Calcutta had not yet been established).

This puja has many interesting distinctive features, for example, the lion has a horse face. Many years ago the sacrifice of a goat was abolished, singi fish was sacrificed instead of a goat.
