Arabian Sea storm Gujarat's coastline is 70 kilometres away

By a Staff Reporter: The storm is headed toward Oman as it forms in the Arabian Sea 70 kilometres off the Gujarat coast at Okha, where the wind is blowing at a speed of more than 50 kph.

Since Saturday morning, when the weather system, which is known as a pressure zone, formed 100 km west of the Porbandar coast, officials with the India Meteorological Department have been keeping an eye on it.

In the next 48 hours, it is quite likely to proceed over the northwest Arabian Sea and towards the coast of Oman, according to a national advisory released by the Meteorological Department on Sunday morning.

The pressure region over the Northeast Arabian Sea between the beaches of Saurashtra and Kutch, according to the Meteorological Department, has been slowly moving north-westward at a speed of 5 kmph for the last six hours, or at 5.30 am on Sunday morning from Porbandar. It was centred 270 kilometres south-southeast of Karachi, 170 kilometres west-northwest of Okha, 70 kilometres south-southwest of Naliya (Gujarat), and 70 kilometres west-northwest of Okha (Pakistan).

By Sunday night, the Met Office expects the wind to average 55 kph with gusts as high as 65 kph. Fishermen have been cautioned not to enter the sea till the storm passes because the sea conditions are highly likely to stay rough until Sunday evening off the Gujarat coast.
