BY A STAFF REPORTER: The SIT highlighted remarks of a witness in its petition in the Ahmedabad civil sessions court on Friday, contesting Setalvad's bail application, and said the plot was carried out at the behest of late Congress leader Ahmed Patel.
According to the state government's special investigation team (SIT), activist Teesta Setalvad was part of a larger conspiracy to destabilise an elected Gujarat government shortly after a train in Godhra was set on fire in 2002, and had received financial assistance from a top leader of a rival political party. The SIT, which was created to investigate Setalvad and R B Sreekumar, then ADGP, Armed Unit, for criminal conspiracy and forgery, cited remarks of a witness in its affidavit in the city civil sessions court on Friday, contesting Setalvad's bail request. "The statements of these two witnesses establish that the conspiracy was carried out by Setalvad and other accused persons at the behest of Late Shri Ahmed Patel, the then Member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha and political advisor to the President of the Indian National Congress," according to the affidavit, which HT has seen
