KOLKATA: There is a well-known American proverb, “Tell me, and I’ll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I’ll understand.”
However, education institutions across the city have found a solution to this. Now colleges and schools have started using drama to teach. Teaching through drama is asking the students to draft a play or a skit around a topic from their curriculum and present it in the claheass. The performers learn about the topic while preparing for the play and the rest learn from the play performed. However, now there are student-built-clubs within colleges who are taking an active initiative in organizing drama competitions to encourage the more such rapid innovations in the teaching and learning process.
Keeping this objective in mind, the Drama club of The Heritage College organized a Drama Competition on 2nd May 2022. The students of the Department of English Language took an active initiative in organizing this competition. Plays like The Prodigal Daughter, Bhooter Bhobishot (The Heritage version) and many more were performed on the stage. Lots of creativity, acting skills and innovations in the script went into each and every plays.
“We believe that the students should explore beyond the four walls, and performing arts is an appropriate medium for it. Our teaching & learning process aim at experiential learning and using alternative education ways to give students the right opportunity to explore with their ideas, understanding new situations and convey their viewpoints,” said Dr. Asijit Datta, Head of the Department, Department of English Language, The Heritage College Kolkata.
“Using drama as a teaching aid is now not only limited to social issues but also it makes its way into the classrooms. Exploring new ways to teaching is a regular feature at our College,” said Mr. P.K.Agarwal, CEO, Heritage Group of Institutions, Kolkata
