The needle of suspected police inaction points towards SDPO Rampurhat, Will he be suspended ?

BY A STAFF REPORTER:

A 35 year old sub inspector turned WBPS officer, Shayan Ahmed is in the eye of the storm in the Birbhum mass murder. According to initial report, Ahmed, who is the SDPO, Rampurhat overseeing the Bagtui village area, did not react to repeated calls for help and information about bombing and setting houses on fire. Ahmed was with the family of slain TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh within striking distance of the houses which were being set on fire. According to senior IPS officers who served in Birbhum as superintendent of police, Ahmed's reputation is allegedly ``suspect.'' The area is lucrative for illegal sand, stone chips and coal operations. The village is right beside the national highway which runs to Jharkhand. Senior officers claimed that Shayan was close to a senior TMC minister and with his blessings managed to hang on to his chair although there were several complaints against him. According to officers at the police directorate in Bhabani Bhaban, Birbhum police chief Nagendra Tripathi had tried to clip his wings but faced stiff resistance from the TMC political leadership. Locals alleged that criminals like Bhadu Sheikh, Lallan, Jahangir along with Palash and Sona thrived under his protection. The government has ``closed'' him from duty at the moment. Questions are being raised as to why the state government has not suspended him after such a heinous crime.
