Voting starts in the state

Voting has now begun in Assam. It is learnt that polling has begun in 80 constituencies of Assam from Sunday. The voting process began at 8:00 a.m. For the first time in the history of civic elections in the state, electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used in the elections. According to the state election commission, 2,532 candidates are in the fray, including 825 from the BJP, 706 from the Congress and 243 candidates of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The number of eligible voters is 16,73,899, which includes 8,32,348 men, 8,41,534 women and 17 transgenders. The election will be held in 24 districts of the state, the commission said.
