Bundelkhand to Bengal-story of an IAS officer and an industrialist

BY AVIJIT NANDI MAJUMDAR: He was born and brought up in one of the most backward and economically poor areas of India. From an extremely humble background, he burnt the midnight oil to qualify as a chartered accountant. The young studious lad from St John's College worked two years as a CA and then cracked the civil services examination in 1988. The boy from Bundelkhand, Sunil Chaturvedi, became an IAS officer and was allotted West Bengal cadre. ``My parents were keen that I join the services,'' Chaturvedi told ANM News when asked about his shift from accountancy to civil services. ``I come from a very humble background and lived my life the very hard way,'' he added. West Bengal provided the perfect launching pad for Sunil Chaturvedi to evolve as an IAS officer and then as an entrepreneur.

``I learnt a lot in my 20 years of government service. As an IAS officer we get prepared in a 360 degree manner,'' said Chaturvedi. He went on a central deputation had to shift base to Delhi after nine years of service in West Bengal. ``My wife was also a civil servant and when she got transferred to Delhi, I too joined her with our kids,'' he said  One sunny day, the private sector came calling on Chaturvedi. ``I did not blink. It was a challenge for me and I jumped on the offer.''  There was no stopping the man on a mission and he marched ahead. ``I was executive director and chief operating officer of Bharat Forge. Caterpillar spotted me and I joined as MD of Tractors India Private Limited.'' After thirty months, Chaturvedi with support from Caterpillar acquired the Company. Sunil Chaturvedi gave birth to Gainwell Commosales private Limited formerly Tractor India Private Limited and he became the Chairman and Managing Director in 2018. Gainwell Engineering, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gainwell Commosales has announced a Rs 500 crore investment in the state. Chaturvedi has set a target of Rs 1000 crore turnover by 2025-26. From a dusty village in Bundelkhand to Sector V in Salt Lake in West Bengal, Sunil Chaturvedi has come a long way with the sky's the limit for him.
