Rail Fracture responsible for the tragedy ?

BY A STAFF REPORTER:

The most probable reason for the train tragedy at Jalpaiguri was ``crack in the tracks'' known in railway parlance as ``rail fracture'' according to initial findings of senior railway officials who have reached the spot. Several coaches of the Bikaner express derailed near Jalpaiguri leaving few passengers dead and many injured. Explaining the ``rail fracture'' officials mentioned that during winter the railway tracks contract leaving a gap in the lines. ``The wheels of the coaches could not maneuver the gap left between the two lines and jumped off the tracks. This could be the most plausible reason,'' said a senior North East Frontier Railway official.
