TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO’S TEACHERS' UNION SAYS FEW CHALLENGES WITH REOPENING OF SCHOOLS ON MONDAY

By a staff reporter:

There were only a few challenges with social distancing and adherence to public health measures following the reopening of school on Monday. These were the words of President of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers association Antonia Tekah- DeFreitas.

According to the country’s Ministry of Education, in Term 2 Primary schools will continue to operate remotely except for standard five students, who are expected to attend school physically from February.

Monday’s reopening saw Post-secondary and tertiary students returning to physical classes joining Forms 4-6 students. IENews spoke with Mrs DeFreitas on Tuesday who told us that in Tobago a vast amount of schools were not ready to see students return. When asked about teacher turnout, Mrs Defreitas said it was what it was supposed to be and with government’s public sector vaccine mandate taking effect mid-January it has not affected turnout.
