In two separate incidents, BSF troops of South Bengal Frontier, apprehended 02 smugglers with medicines on June 20, 2021. The estimated cost of the seized medicines is Rs 4,14,494/-. All these medicines were being smuggled to Bangladesh from area of ICP Petrapole district- North 24 Parganas.
On 20 June acting on information received by the Intelligence Branch of BSF, a special vehicle search operation was carried out by the BSF troops of ICP Petrapole, 179 Battalion, Sector Kolkata. At around 1550 hrs, the Search Party observed a suspicious truck (WB 41 B 4923) approaching, which was going from India to Bangladesh carrying export goods. On the basis of prior information, when the BSF party searched the truck closely, two big bags were found from inside its cabin, which were very well packed with plastic. When these packets were opened by the BSF party, medicines (Tapentadol tablets which are used as pain relievers after surgery) were recovered from these. Soon the Search party seized the above medicines and also took the truck driver (smuggler) into custody. The apprehended truck driver (smuggler) has been identified as Hriday Debnath, age– 19 years, Village + Post Office– Petrapole, District– North 24 Parganas.
During questioning the apprehended smuggler Hriday Debnath, revealed that he is an Indian national, resident of Petrapole and works as a truck driver and regularly goes to Bangladesh with export goods loaded truck . He further told that today (June 20), this truck was given by Manoj Baidya, resident of Bangaon, He had also told that some medicines have been hidden in its cabin, which on reaching at ICP Benapole (Bangladesh) has to be handed to a person named Hasan (Bangladeshi transporter) in return for which he got Rs. 1500/- from Manoj Baidya. But even before crossing the ICP (International Border), BSF caught him with medicines during vehicle checking. The Border Security Force has sought cooperation of Customs officials to prevent smuggling in the guise of import and export vehicles and personal belongings of passengers at ICP Petrapole.
In another incident, on the same day on 20 June, 2021, the troops of BSF in the course of daily routine duty conducted a search operation in the vicinity of ICP Petrapole (International Border). Around 1230 hrs, BSF troops observed a man (smuggler) with 02 bags in suspicious condition in Petrapole market. When the BSF troops searched the man and the bag, various types of medicines were recovered from inside it. Soon the Search Party seized the above medicines and also took the smuggler into custody. The apprehended person (smuggler) has been identified as Kamal Das, age - 42 years, Village Post Office - Petrapole, District - North 24 Parganas.
During questioning, the apprehended smuggler Kamal Das revealed that he is an Indian citizen who is a resident of Petrapole. He further revealed that he works as a van puller. Today (June 20) morning a person namely Maruf Mandal (Money Exchanger) given these medicines and told to arrange a passenger who can receive these medicine willingly and carry to Bangladesh. For this work, he would get Rs 200/- from Maruf Mandal but during checking BSF caught him with these medicines in Petrapole market in front of gate number 03. 6 Apprehended smugglers and seized medicines have been handed over to Customs Office Petrapole for further legal proceedings.
