Vineet Goyal is tipped to become the next police commissioner of Kolkata after the retirement of current incumbent Somen Mitra on December 31. According to sources close to the state home department, Goyal, a 1994 batch IPS officer heading the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal police, along with Gyanwant Singh, Additional Director general of police, CID and Dr Debashish Roy, ADG, training are in the race for the top cop job in Kolkata. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has tasked Gyanwant Singh to look after the crucial Gangasagar mela, while Debasis Roy has served in various capacities in Kolkata police. State home department officials pointed out that Goyal, who was once posted as the man in charge of CM security in his capacity as director security, is clearly a favourite and front runner.
