DEEP FREEZE TEMPERATURES HITTING CALGARY OVER THE HOLIDAYS

By Chandrayee Roy Choudhury, Canada: Plug in the block heater and get out the heavy winter jacket, because freezing temperatures are expected to grip Calgary over the holiday season.

The weather agency is forecasting temperatures to drop between -18 C to -30 C over the next few days without the wind chill, marking some of the coldest days Calgary has seen so far this winter.

But the coldest air will settle in Calgary on Monday morning, when daytime high temperatures of -27 C linger throughout the day.

Terri Lang, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said air coming from the Arctic has had a chance to deepen in temperature as the days have gotten shorter. Mild temperatures experienced in the fall may have lulled Albertans for a rude wake-up call this winter.

There’s the cold, and then there’s the wind. When those two combine, that is the most dangerous time to be out.”

When outside, dress in layers because the air between the layers of clothing is what will keep you warm, Lang said. When temperatures drop below -25 C, the risk of frostbite and hypothermia starts to set in, so try and limit time spent outside as much as possible.
