TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO RELEASES DETAILS OF PEDIATRIC COVID-19 FATALITIES

By a Staff Reporter: Details of the four children who have succumbed to covid-19 was revealed by Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of health and according to Senior Paediatric Emergency Specialist at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex Dr Joanne Paul, over the past year 320 children have been admitted into the parallel healthcare system.

At the Health Ministry’s media conference on Wednesday Dr Paul said that though there have been zero Mis-c cases since September, due to the vaccination programme for those aged 12-18, the four pediatric covid-19 deaths include two 7 year olds, one 13 year old, and one 15 year old; all of whom had separate medical illness which made them vulnerable to covid-19.

She added that there have been 3 categories of children hospitalized. The first being babies with a blood infection called sepsis, adolescents with pre existing conditions such as obesity and sickle cell and lastly, children with injuries who would have been asymptomatic.

To prevent pediatric covid-19 infections, Dr Paul suggested that vaccinated mothers breastfeed babies under 6 months for as long as possible as antibodies can be passed onto the baby.
