56 FULLY VACCINATED PEOPLE HAVE SUCCUMBED TO COVID-19 IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

By a Staff Reporter: Trinidad & Tobago has reported 56 fully vaccinated people that have succumbed to the covid-19 virus. This is according to Health minister Terrence Deyalsingh who, at the Ministry of Health’s media conference on Wednesday gave an update on the government's covid-19 response.

Minister deyalsingh compared this to the over 1400 people who were unvaccinated as he revised the mortality statistics of covid-19.

With Omicron identified as the new variant of concern, Minister Deyalsingh also provided information on Trinidad and Tobago’s approach to the virus and its mutations.

He reassured the public that they will be notified once the first case of the variant has been detected in the country. Minister Deyalsingh and Senior Paediatric Emergency Specialist, Dr Joanne Paul then cautioned citizens that Omicron may already be in the country but not detected.

The concern extends to the detectability within the immune system and how it responds to already administered vaccines. Dr Paul highlighted that Omicron will replace Delta as the dominant variant, despite the mild symptoms and high transmissibility.
